Learn the basics about navigation
By Marujo IBTM

Hello passengers! Here's your Sailor to share some basic information about navigation. Namely, all the terms we will present are part of the crew's vocabulary and are very useful in different contexts.

Stern
Generally, a vessel (be it a speedboat, catamaran or even a ship) is divided into three main parts: bow, midship and stern. The terms come from Latin and refer, respectively, to the front, middle and rear of the boat. Therefore, mastering these nomenclatures facilitates processes such as anchoring and towing.
Port X Starboard
The navigation terms port and starboard refer to the side of the boat, being, respectively, left and direct. Thus, the colors red (port) and green (starboard) are responsible for signaling in ports.
That said, it is worth highlighting that starboard can also be called “starboard”.
nautical miles
The nautical mile is a unit of measurement used almost exclusively by the navy. That said, one nautical mile corresponds to 1852 meters (1,852 km), but be careful! Don't confuse them with statute miles. These are the unit of measurement for countries like the United States and England.
Tide table
Finally, the tide table is a projection of the times of high tide and low tide. Approximately every 6 hours, the sea completes a cycle and alternates between high tide and low tide. Therefore, it is very important for fishermen and sailors. In fact, you may even need it, as it's a good idea to check the destination board to avoid any hassle or frustration (some natural pools, for example, may be covered during high tide).
In summary, these are the main terms for getting started in navigation 😉
